There are boat trips available where you can visit many of the coral reefs and popular spots for diving. You will find different charters available that will take you out on 1/2 day or full day excursion to a few unique snorkeling areas. In some cases, all of your gear is included in the price of the charter. This allows beginners with no equipment or gear to try their hand at diving.

Snorkeling can be a great alternative to scuba diving. Sometimes you don’t yet have the training or equipment to scuba dive. It can be a fun adventure for adults and children. Anyone that is comfortable swimming can master snorkeling in the ocean, this includes children.

Learning to master the use of your equipment is the very first step to perfecting the techniques of snorkeling.

In addition to this, you also need to realize that everyone that snorkels needs to set personal limits to their movements and the time that they remain in the water.  There is no benefit to pushing yourself too far.  Remember that each time that you go under the water a new experience awaits.  The weather, the current and even the temperature of the water will change, creating a different environment for snorkeling.

Beyond anything else, the one thing you have to master with snorkeling is relaxing.  By providing yourself with the ability to feel comfortable in the water, you’ll be able to accomplish a lot more.  You will truly be able to reap the benefits of snorkeling by relaxing.

Snorkeling Fins: An Important Tool

Although you will want to take time to consider the type of snorkel you’ll be using to actually snorkel with, the fact is that you need to also purchase or rent fins. 

Fins are simply shoe like “fin shaped” flippers that you will put over your feet.  Usually made of plastic or rubber, they are a necessary feature because they allow you to flow through the water easily.  In addition, they keep the water calm, unlike swimming would.  Calm is a good thing especially when you want the fish to come up to you or even more so the dolphins.

First, purchase the right size fins for your needs.  Don’t assume that any that you find at the discount department store will work for you.  You need a pair that is high in quality and durable.  After all, you don’t want the fins to come flying off your feet when you enter the water and give your first movement.  Get a professional to help you to try them on.  Look for a snug but not too tight feel.

Once you have your fins, the next step is to actually use them correctly.  To get started, you need to learn how to flutter kick correctly.  Your fins need to remain under the water, actually under the water line completely.  You also need to keep your knees, ankles and legs relaxed.  If you have them stiffened chances are good that you’ll have leg cramps quickly.  Picture a mermaid in your head.  The type of movement that they would use is what you want to mimic.  You want a flow, not a bicycle type of kick. 

Use your fins as a tail, not as to different elements but one.  When you do this, the fin will move you through the water easily, without you having to do anything with your arms or your shoulders.  Fins are a must for those that plan to really enjoy what the water has to offer to them.

Snorkeling: Water In Your Mask

Practicing snorkeling is an important part of the process of learning how to do it.  Remember, once you really get into the flow of things you are likely to have nothing to worry about or even think about. 

Most people become very comfortable with their snorkel after a few minutes of practice.  One thing that causes individuals to get a bit uneasy is the water.  If water is getting into your mask, then you need to know what to do to get it out.  First, remain calm as it’s not such a bad thing.

The inside of your mask should stay rather dry.  Often, though, water can get into the mask.  Usually this is due to the strap at the back of your head not being held tightly or, perhaps the mask has shifted somewhat on your face.  When this happens, water can seep into the mask causing your mask to flood some.  To fix this, simply raise your head a bit and pull out the lower edge of the mask.  The water will flow out of the mask, draining nearly completely from it.  You actually may want to allow some of the water to remain in the mask, just a drop or two, to allow you to swish it around and defog later.

Another fear that many experience is when water gets into the snorkel.  To remedy this situation, you want to get the water out with a burst of air.  All you need to do is to blow air up through it.  Or, just say a word or two.  The water will come out the top in a burst.  This should clear your snorkel of water.  But, before you begin breathing in, do so slowly just in case there is still some water inside it.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to practice these things so that you aren’t surprised by them when you are actually snorkeling.
